Meet the Students

Watch 1

Brian Smith

Falmouth, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
Semester 2 only

I am an 18 year old who loves skiing, fishing, and sailing. I decided to participate in Class Afloat because I wanted to travel the world before attending college. I look forward to meeting new people and seeing new places on this fantastic trip. After completing a semester onboard Concordia, I plan to attend a maritime academy and become a marine engineer.

While on Class Afloat I hope to gain experience as a world traveler. The land programs around the world will make me more aware of different societies and cultures. I will also learn to be a crew member on a ship. The biggest challenge will be living in such close quarters and being forced to deal with people all of the time. I have just graduated from high school on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and after this trip I would like to go to the University of Victoria or Wilfred Laurier University to study psychology and law.

I hope to gain a great deal of knowledge about a square rigger during Class Afloat. I enjoy mountaineering and want to make my navigation skills as good as they can be. Staying alert without much sleep is another challenge I look forward to (not to mention keeping my bunk tidy). One day I would like to join the Coast Guard and fly one of their Bell 212 Coast Guard Helicopters.

I feel like I am following in the steps of my big brother by going on Class Afloat this year. I very excited by this chance to see the world! Not seeing land for 12 days straight will be a challenge. I hope to go to a university after Class Afloat while enjoying my hobbies of horseback riding, skiing, and sailing.

Stephanie Mathers

St. Eustache, Quebec, Canada
2nd Semester

I am very outgoing and have varied interests. During my high school years, I was involved with many school organizations and held many class offices. In my free time, I love to go alpine skiing which I’ve been practicing for the past fourteen years. I also enjoy rock climbing, windsurfing, horseback riding, and badminton. Keeping in shape is very important to me and I work out 3 or 4 times a week. When I need to relax, I play the piano. I’ve been looking forward to sailing around the world for years and I can’t wait to get started.

Chris Windsor

West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Full year

I love the outdoors and hope to gain a greater understanding of the world, seeing the different environments. I also enjoy skiing and football. Sleep deprivation will be the toughest aspect of this trip, not to mention small rooms. Following Class Afloat I hope to go to a university and then to law school.
