He was most recently chief mate on PEACE, a 260 foot sailing yacht in the North Sea, and will return there after this semester on Concordia. He has crossed the Atlantic several times and the only continents he has not visited are Australia and Antarctica. This is his first trip on Concordia and with Class Afloat.

This is his 1st time working with Class Afloat. He graduated from medical school in 1986 and has had 6 years of experience as a practicing physician while also doing research and teaching anatomy to University students. He has been traveling a great deal for 20 years and began in 1976 by visiting Canada. Since then he has also traveled around Europe, Turkey, the former USSR, and the Caribbean. Russell MacDonald

Ship's Doctor / Teacher
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

I have two things that I enjoy a great deal: travel and the 'art' of medicine. I think there is no better way of combining the two than being a part of Class Afloat. I have traveled extensively across Canada and the US by bicycle. The travel bug has also taken me backpacking across Europe, Africa, and Canada. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Bishop’s University in 1987, and graduated from Queen’s University Medical School in 1991. Along with my responsibilities as the ship’s doctor and as a teacher, I will also be the contact for Ocean Challenge onboard Concordia. I will provide regular reports about life onboard the ship, photograph the voyage, and work with the staff on a film documentary about Class Afloat.

Liza Oktay

Teacher, Bosun's Mate
Columbia, Maryland, USA

I grew up in Columbia, Maryland where I spent most summers sailing in the Chesapeake Bay. I studied sociology at Oberlin College and worked at the Getaway Sailing School as a sailing instructor during the summer months. After graduation in 1992, I spent one year sailing as a crew member on the tall ship, Pride of Baltimore II. Ports of call on that voyage included Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Panama, Hawaii, and Alaska. Since the summer of 1994, I have been running sailing courses for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. I look forward to working for Class Afloat because it will allow me to combine my three passions: sailing, teaching, and traveling.
