September 21, 1995 aboard ConcordiaCaptain's Inspection
Sunday, Sept 10th, students and crew were in a mad rush to clean every inch of the ship for Captain's Inspection. The cleaning period lasted from just after Colors (at 0800 hrs) to 1300 hrs. Following inspection, we received a day off from classes. This free time was spent in a number of ways, including sun-tanning, reading, and catching up on sleep. We received a break from galley duty, and enjoyed being served dinner by the teachers. We all came to dinner cross-dressed and with a "date." Later we competed for the titles "Miss and Mr. Concordia 1995." This colorful event was known as the "Romantic Atlantic Soiree and Beauty Pageant." Our trip across the Atlantic is proving to be extremely eventful!Michele (Mik-el-ee) Discepola
September 21, 1995 aboard ConcordiaCrossing the Atlantic
So far this month onboard Concordia has included many activities, supplying us with lots of stories to tell. We have already experienced 4 ports-of-call: Louisbourg and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Boston, Massachusetts, and St. John, New Brunswick. We are now crossing the Atlantic en route to Ponta Delgada, on the Azorian island of Sao Miguel, far off the west coast of Portugal. The winds have been dead lately, and we have had only one good day of sailing in the last week. The Atlantic is quite calm, surprisingly.
On this eleven day crossing, I have learned many different things. One is that you can never predict the weather, neither the behavior of the ocean nor the speed of the wind. Wind is a lot more important than I had thought it to be. If our speed is under 4 knots, we usually stop using the sails and turn on the engine.
As for ocean life, I never thought that I would see so many dolphins. Most recently, we saw a pod of approximately 20 right near the Azores. We have also seen whales, sharks and even sea turtles.
