:How do you resolve serious conflicts between students? Do they just avoid each other or is there a forum for settling disputes? ...7th Grade Class, Redmond, Washington
nswered by Greg Miner -- 2/17/96
A:Curiously, even during long stretches at sea, we have very few disputes among our students. For example, we have been at sea for 18 days now and the only conflicts that came up were over junk food that had mysteriously disappeared. If a major conflict between students did take place, we would resolve it by bringing the students together and having them settle their differences in the company of myself and another staff member. For the most part, the students do a fine job of settling their personal conflicts by themselves.
: How do you find out your longitude and latitude? ..Mr. Miller’s Class, Seattle, WA -- 1/16/96
nswered by Brian Smith, 2/16/96
A:There are many different ways to find your position at sea. The old fashion way uses a sextant, a hand-held device that tells your longitude and latitude at exactly noon using the sun. Another way is using the GPS- Global Positioning System. This system uses 26 satellites in space. A small computer on the bridge and in the radio room figures out where the satellites are in relation to our ship. Once that information is collected the computer can calculate our longitude and latitude at any given time.
: Have there ever been any siblings in the program at the same time? ...Evergreen Junior High School -- 1/4/96
nswered by Simon Menard -- 2/16/96
A:Yes, there are siblings onboard. My sister was onboard Concordia for the first semester and she talked me into this whole thing. It turned out to be a good idea after all. I joined her on the Concordia for the second half of the voyage starting in Durban, South Africa. I'll tell you one thing, I'm glad to have my sister Val onboard. I hate to admit it but I do get lonely sometimes and need someone to talk to. It's great to have someone around who understands you. I wouldn't have it any other way. Besides, Val and I aren't the only siblings onboard- there's Charles and Marie Jeanne Godbout as well.
