:Was anyone on the boat injured in the ‘Roaring Forties’ crossing? ...Clyde F. Brown School, Millis, MA

No one has been seriously injured but some of us went through one really scary experience. One day there was a lot of wind and huge waves. I was standing on port side with three other people. Suddenly, this big wave came over and knocked us down. I heard two people scream and then nothing...there was water everywhere. I really thought I had gone overboard. A few seconds later, all the water disappeared. I looked about frantically and was relieved when I finally saw my two friends again. My one friend ended up on top of the other who was on top of a pin rail a couple of meters away. As for me, I was stuck between a life ring and a bin against the side of the ship. One of my friends cut his finger, but it wasn't serious. All of this happened in less than three minutes and it was only later that we realized how scary the whole situation was.
:Do the land-locked Alberta students have a more difficult time adjusting to life at sea than those who grew up near the sea? ...John M., Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
nswered by Josh Remillard-- 3/29/96
It depends on the person. I have never been seasick (knock on wood). But Bradly, another student from Alberta, Canada, was very sick at the beginning of the trip. On the other side of the coin, there are students who live near the water who have gotten seasick. In the end, it really all depends on the person. I believe that sea sickness in more mental than physical. So, no sea sickness is not determined by where you live.
: Have you encountered any whales or sharks in the ocean? ...Ryan M.
nswered by Windy Martin 3/29/96
Yes. On our way from Tanzania to South Africa, we saw a gigantic pod of whales. We were furling sails and from our vantage point we could see them all over. Sometimes we will see one or two whales but they are usually far off. We have seen sharks but usually just their fins. We also have seen quite a number of dolphins. They can be seen off the side of the ship or jumping near the bow. It is amazing to watch them swim because they are so graceful and fast. The dolphins also swim quite close to the ship allowing us to see them quite well.
