:What subjects are you required to take on this voyage? ... Howitt Middle School, Farmingdale, NY
Answered by Jean-Pascal Pelletier -- 4/13/96
Our 6 teachers supply a selection of 12 classes. These classes are: social studies 30, anthropology, psychology 20, math 30, calculus, economics 30, marine biology, chemistry 20 + 30, physics 20 + 30 and physical education. Our phys. ed is actually our sail training class where we learn about weather and celestial navigation. Usually students choose 4-6 classes which they need depending on their grade level and what is going to be useful for them later in college or university. There are two mandatory classes. Everyone must take phys ed. Every student must also take one semester of marine biology. There is a great deal offered even though the ship is so small (compared to a normal school).
:Do students get homesick and how do they cope with it? ...Ms. Lyon’s 5th Grade Class, Taunton, MA
Answered by Brad Klaiber -- 4/14/96
People don't get homesick very often because we are always surrounded by friends. However, when someone does become homesick we are there for our friends to talk to or to go through pictures of our friends and family back home. For some people it helps to look at photos but forothers they like to spend time by themselves and write letters or just think.
:If you were able to choose where the Concordia would sail, where would you like it to go? ... Colonial Middle School, Norristown, PA
Answered by Marie-Soleil Joly -- 4/12/96
If I was able to choose where the Concordia would sail, I would have chosen to go exactly where we have been. There have been so many interesting places that we have visited, each having its own distinct culture. Just by visiting a few places I now know that I will be fascinated by different places and cultures for the rest of my life. Knowing about different cultures and societies gives perspective to your own culture, and that’s what I will keep with me forever. If I did have the chance to do another trip similar to this one, however, I would choose to visit either South America or Asia.
