:Do you get report cards, and if so, are they sent home to your parents? ... Brian G., Coal City, IL.
Answered by Duncan Lane, Teacher onboard Concordia -- 4/27/96
Absolutely. Academics are a very important part of Class Afloat - and the students course load is very demanding. Report cards go home half way through each semester, so that parents can monitor their child' s process. These reports are very detailed and include marks, comment s from each teacher, and information detailing participation/ involvement in various other non-academic programs. Each report card concludes with a comment from the program director. If anything, it may be more detailed than a typical high school report card.
:Did anyone ever bring a music instrument on board to entertain people? ... Ben W., Coal City, IL.
Answered by Simon Menard -- 4/29/96
I brought a guitar onboard the second semester. Well actually I bought a guitar from my homestay family in Durban, South Africa. Every night I like to sit out on deck with a bunch of friends and bust out the guitar.Sometimes people sing, but I have found that you have a greater chance of running the Concordia into an aircraft carrier in the middle of the day than you do to actually hear someone singing a song aboard the Concordia. Though that may be a slight exaggeration, it would be nice if people weren’t so self-concious about their voices. There is something magical about playing music in the middle of the ocean.
:Are there any contests or competitions aboard the Concordia? ... Ms. Collopy’s Class, Branford, CT
Answered by Stephanie Mathers -- 5/2/96
We have competitions once in a while onboard Concordia.. Once we had ''watch olympics'', which consists of watch groups competing against each other in different activities like: wall sitting, crab walking, a scavanger hunt and egg dropping from 30 feet high. The watch that finished with the most points won a cheap little trophy and chocolate bars, though it is still a lot of fun. We just had the Mr. and Ms. Concordia contest. Students and teachers cross dressed and strutted their stuff. Mr. Concordia went 2 'spike' better known as lisa mason. Ms. Concordia went hands down to Devon, our fearless leader. All in all, the competitions are very fun, and they can literally let you see your friends from a very different perspective.
