Q&A with Concordia from the week ending October 25, 1996
How and where do you wash your clothes? Ms. Lemke’s Class, Redmond, WA, USA
by Jacquie Davies, 10/25/96
For clothes to be worthy of a washing, they need to be unbearably smelly and stained (your roommates will usually tell you when that time comes). We have a small laundry room with four basins where you soak, scrub and rinse your clothes by hand. Drying them outside by hanging them on the mizzen deck leaves them fresh if it is a nice day out. If not, you can hang them in the laundry room on lines. In addition, we are allowed two loads in the washing machines, per watch, every six days. Lately, we have been trying to save water and have been washing our clothes in buckets of salt water and soap- it works well.
Is there hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean? Mary M., Charlottesville, VA, USA
by Karen May, 10/14/96
There is a hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean. It is from June to October. There are three main factors that cause hurricanes: the water temperature, latitude and islands. The safe zone where hurricanes do not occur are seven degrees north and south of the equator. We were in hurricane season from Puerto Vallarta to the Galapagos Islands. Our weather fax system onboard informs the Captain of any disturbances or bad weather. The Captain had to alter our course once to miss the heavy winds but there was never any other problems.
