Be Concordia's Tour Guide!

Have you ever wanted to be a tour guide on an exotic journey?
Then enter Ocean Challenge’s Port Guide Contest!

  • Winners will be published online!

  • Winning entries will be sent to Concordia!

What do I do?
The first thing to do is click here to find the cities which we have selected to be the subject cities of the contest. You may enter an essay for each city if you wish. The more you discover, the better!

Now, learn all you can about your chosen city or cities. You don’t have to actually go there, but you’ll need to research the place. If you were going to any of them, what would you want to know??

For example, you may want to research a few of these topics:

  • historic or archeological sites
  • museums
  • history
  • sports teams
  • local form of government
  • current issues
  • language
  • ethnicities
  • religion
  • natural resources
  • city's layout
  • architecture

Once you have found the information that you want to tell Concordia about, write your guide to the city (250 words absolute maximum). Write so that your submission would be helpful to visitors (such as the Class Afloat students) who are arriving there for the first time.

How do I enter?
Once you have your Tour Guide Essay finished, edited, polished, within the length guidelines, and with no spelling mistakes, send it to Ocean Challenge. Don't forget to tell us your name, grade, schoolname and address. You may either:

  • email it to ocean@sitesalive.com

  • fax it to (617)248-9777

  • or send it via regular post to:
    Class Afloat Tour Guide
    c/o Ocean Challenge, Inc.
    225 Friend Street
    Boston, MA 02114

When are entries due?
We must receive your submission at least two weeks before Concordia reaches the subject ports. (If we got the guides any later, the students on Concordia wouldn’t be able to use them in port!) Click here for a list of the entry dates.

How are winners chosen?
The staff of Ocean Challenge will choose one winner from Elementary School (up to grade 6) and one from Middle School (grades 6-9.) The winning entries will be posted on the Class Afloat Web site and telexed via satellite to Concordia. And they may be printed in Class Afloat News!
