How did you spend your winter break?
...Harbor Country Day School, St. James, New York, USA

by Chris O'Neil

When I flew home from the ship, I stayed with my father for one week. It was really nice for just the two of us to celebrate Christmas together. Then I went to my house and stayed with my mother. On January 13, I flew to Newfoundland and spent five wonderful days skiing.

I really enjoyed having the chance to spend time with the people who are truly close to me. It was also really nice to be able to relax and even sleep in once in a while. All in all, I think with our type of lifestyle, it is important to have the opportunity for a break from the demands of being a crew member on a tall ship.

One thing I have learned from being so far away from my family is that I really do love them all.

What are you most excited about seeing?
...Forest Ridge Academy

by Kendra Schmidt

Personally, I believe that the most interesting thing to see while participating in Class Afloat, is the abundance of cultures and different ways of life around the world. So far, we have learned about the Chinese, Hindus, and Muslims and their traditional dress and lifestyle. I also enjoy seeing the ancient temples and ruins because each city has its own unique history.

There are many things to purchase, but many of the cities are very Americanized and therefore, remind me of home.

I am looking forward to snorkeling in many different ports and seeing a variety of marine life. In my opinion, Class Afloat is a great opportunity in which new, exciting things are available to see everywhere you go.

I think that Saudi Arabia is going to be the most interesting port because of the way of life that they strictly follow, which is going to be quite foreign to many of the Class Afloat students. Just living on a ship while continuing my education is exciting in itself.
