How did you spend your winter break?
...Harbor Country Day School, St. James, New York, USAOn December 22nd, I saw everyone off at the airport. A day and a half later, I was still sitting on the ship waiting for the new cook and bosun, imagining all my new buddies being greeted by friends and family back home. I've never spent a Christmas in Indonesia.
Throughout the break, I traveled around Bali, Indonesia and then took the local ferry over to Lombok (the next island east of Bali). That was interesting on its own. I then settled for a week in a grass lot on a white beach and stayed with the locals. The were no tourists on this island.
I made it back to the ship in time to sail from Port Benoa, Bali to Port Klang, Malaysia (ten days) as a crew member. This is where I enjoyed myself the most. I traveled up to the highlands alone and met many travelers and slept in the jungle. I played drums in the Tai Dosum festival which was quite and honor.
...Parkway Elementary School, Boone, North Carolina, USAI am very excited about the idea of living for five months on a ship. I'll make new friends, see many things I've heard about before, and it will give me a great opportunity to perfect my English. Living on a ship for five months will give me a lot of time for reflections, for writing poems and songs, and learning the harmonica.
