Have you come across any whales? And if so, where?
...Mr. Babin's Class, Westford, MA, USA

by Amy Simard

Yes. Last semester during my rotation of the morning watch, (5:30-8:00 AM), Isabelle, the first mate , and I saw a pilot whale. A pilot whale is black to dark gray in color and averages 8.5m (28 ft.) in length. They are usually found in warm waters close to the coast.

Seeing the pilot whale was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I have heard stories of other Concordia whale sightings. One time, a sperm whale was swimming under and around the ship for one and a half hours. I was told it was one of the most beautiful and amazing things ever. It makes the trip more enjoyable when we are so close to various creatures of life.

How does it feel when you get off the boat and start walking on land?
...New Egypt Middle School, New Egypt, NJ

by Amy Simard

When you stay on a boat for a couple of days, you get used to the movement that the waves make on the boat. When I leave the boat to go on land, I personally feel very weird. When I walk on land and I often have the same feeling as when I was onboard. In other words, I feel unbalanced and sometimes I have some trouble walking straight. A lot of people don't feel the motion at all, so it all depends on the person.
