What do you look forward to most when coming to a new port?
...Cameron F., Vancouver, Canada

by Patrick Bartolatz-Sawyer

Well, Cameron, when we get to a new port, different people go do different things. If I were to generalize, on our free days, I would probably say that most people look for food and a good place to eat because we don’t get soda pop and junk food onboard very often. People also hunt for these ice cream bars called the Magnum Classic. We also have a large group of people who immediately go in search of flea markets, ship chandlers, and bosun supplies for craft supplies. Many people onboard are craftsmen, so on most nights you will find someone making or building something. There are also those who as soon as we dock, go to find the closest music store.

Do you find it hard to communicate with people when visiting different countries?
...Vanessa E., Calgary, Alberta, Canada

by Angela Bartlett

Making new friends in countries we visit is something many of us look forward to in port. In many ports, English is not spoken, which causes a little bit of a problem for some of us. However, we always seem to find a way past this barrier. By using body language, we can communicate enough to get a point across. We try to learn some words in their language, which always gives them a little laugh. If we are lucky, we meet people who can speak English as a second language. We are now visiting ports where the language is not so foreign to our ears. Some people onboard can speak Spanish, German, French (of course), Polish, Dutch, and Norwegian which gives us a little more help with communication. No matter what language we speak people all over the world can have a lot of fun together.

What kind of meals does the cook make and what are some of your favorite meals?
...
Jonathon S., Manhatten Beach Intermediate School, Manhatten Beach

by Kendra Schmidt

Our cook, Kelly, makes excellent meals for the 50 people that he has to cook for. Usually for breakfasts, we alternate between cereal, pancakes, French toast, and eggs with hash browns. Each breakfast is also served with fresh fruit. For lunch, Kelly usually makes some kind of soup, but we've also had pizzas, sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, and salads. We always have fresh bread with lunch and fruit. We had lasagna a couple of nights ago. Steak, roast beef, spaghetti, chicken, or some sort of pasta are also frequent meals. My favorite meal onboard is 'shepard’s pie'. It tastes great, and everyone looks forward to it. The meals are all very good, and we are definitely not starving. Kelly makes sure that we get enough food from each food group and keeps leftovers in the refrigerator for people who get hungry during the day.
