I am a firm believer in the non-traditional, yet highly practical experience which Class Afloat
provides high school students. Whether taking part in land programs or the traditional curriculum
offered in the the onboard classrooms or learning lessons only the sea can teach, students will find
mnay opportunities for personal growth, responsibility and leadership. If Class Afloat had been an
educational alternative when I was in high school 20 years ago, I would have loved to participate.
I have always had a passion for sailing and was thrilled a few years ago when I had the
opportunity to sail the Boston to Liverpool leg of the 1992 Grand Columbus Regatta aboard the
Ukranian Tall ship, Tovarish- sister ship to the American Tall Ship Eagle. Having sailed on
Concordia last fall when she left San Diego, I had a chance to meet the full year students. I look
forward to working with them as well as the students who have joined Class Afloat for the second
semester.
