JTo teach with Class Afloat aboard the Concordia is the opportunity of a
lifetime. As educator of social science courses, the entire world has
become my classroom. The ability of students to apply their knowledge to
real life situations among different cultures will help them to truly understand global
interdependence.
I made the decision to teach on the Concordia the moment I saw her two years ago. As teacher
aboard a topsail schooner, I was then experiencing the benefits of a moving classroom as we
traveled between Maine and Texas. The chance to increase the size of my classroom from the
eastern United States to the entire world is nothing short of a dream come true.
It is my desire to provide students here on the Concordia, as well as those following our trip via
internet, with experiences that will allow them to gain awareness of the many different cultures of the
world. Our excursions into the local communities and visits with the people living there will allow
this to happen. I also hope to assist students in understanding their role as global citizens. Whether
trekking through the rainforest of Malaysia or visiting the ruins of ancient Greece, the next five
months will provide all of us with the chance to see what the world has to offer.
