6/26Visited Tivoli- Europe's oldest amusement park (opened in 1843)- for an evening of rides, performances, concerts, fun, and fireworks
6/25Students packed their belongings, went on bike tour of the city, visited botanical gardens, attended outdoor orchestra performance
6/24Had study sessions, exams, and yearbook meeting in the morning, went sightseeing in the afternoon
6/22Visited Copenhagen's art museum, attended jazz concert in the park
6/21Studied for provincial exams, students' friends and family arrived for graduation, attended concert in the park
6/20At 2030, docked at last port stop- Copenhagen, had major Captain's Inspection, all sails removed in preparation for shipyard, students toured first Class Afloat ship, had 80's dance in the evening
6/18Departed from Oslo, sailed through Skagerrak Strait, scrubbed deck in preparation for our arrival in our final port, Copenhagen, Denmark
6/17Visited Viking, Kon-Tiki, and Fram Museum where we learned about Norweigan explorers, toured the Norweigan tall ship, Christian Radich
6/16Docked at Oslo, Martin Braathen's family welcomed us and visited Concordia
6/15After clearing customs, students had free evening, it is light outside until after midnight
6/14Entered Skakerrak Strait- well known for storms but we had very calm weather, more preparations for shipyard, final exams in economics, English, and math given
6/12Preparation underway for shipyard: took down mizzen sail and lines, removed ratlines from mizzen and main shrouds, inventoried storage area, the dense fog required special attention by lookouts, set sail at 0800 and gybed several times during the day
6/11Departed Ostend, experienced thunderstorms with rain and poor visibility, seeing lots of ship traffic to and from large European ports including Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Amsterdam
6/10Visited the beautiul city of Brugge- a 15 minute train ride away
6/9Rented bicycles and went on a tour of Ostend and surrounding areas, everyone met in the park in the afternoon for a football and soccer game
6/8Passed between Dover, England and Calais, France, entered Ostend's harbor at 1300, cleared by the maritime police, explored city in afternoon
6/7Passed Jersey, Gurnesy, Sark and Alderney Islands, and entered English Channel, sailed at record speed of 17.4 knots with the help of the current
6/6Many students explored outlying towns around St. Malo, departed St. Malo at 1900
6/5Students had option of visiting the Museum of Cape Horn, Jacques Cartier Museum or the aquarium, several students had friends or family visiting, provisioned ship in the afternoon
6/3Experienced very strong tidal currents, 0430 to 0600 anchored five miles off Saint Malo-waiting for pilot, at 0730 arrived at entrance to Saint Malo's harbor, at 0930 cleared customs, Captain's inspection during day, free time at night
6/2Entered English Channel, motored along French coast at a distance of 3 to 4 nautical miles, had port presentation on Saint Malo, scheduled to arrive in Saint Malo tomorrow morning
6/1Experienced heavy pitching against high waves, had classes, heavy east and westbound travel, very slow progress due to bad weather
5/31Entered Bay of Biscay, heavy traffic, saw many dolphins
5/29Had glorious, sunny day, whales and dolphins sighted, went record distance of 201 nautical miles- most miles traveled in one day since San Diego, motored 30 to 35 nautical miles off the coast of Spain
5/28Departed Lisbon at 2000, had classes and yearbook meeting, at 2330 passed Cabo do Roca- the western most point of Europe
5/27Had free day to explore Lisbon, a group of students met Bryan Adams (a Canadian singer) who invited them to his concert
5/25Visited a nautical museum, toured the caravel Boa Esperanza, a caravel is a small sailing vessel that was typical of the Portuguese- it was the type of ship that was used by Christopher Columbus for his voyages of exploration
In the village of Averio, saw a parade in honor of the reign of King Joao II- the parade was a reenactment of the procession of the King when he visited the towns of his kingdom in the 15th century
5/23From the deck of Concordia, saw the Tower of Belem, a huge statue of Christ, and Cabo (Cape) Especial, docked at 2300 in Alcantara which is south of Lisbon, Portugal
5/22Saw shores of Portugal and Spain at distance of 20 to 30 nautical miles, students wore red and blue uniforms to "dress the yards" by climbing aloft and spacing themselves along each yard
5/20Took train (a first for some) to Spain's oldest and most famous bullfighting ring located in the beautiful city of Ronda, visited gorge located in center of city which has a fascinating bridge across it, had free time to explore the city's sites and unique shops
5/19Had beautiful view of Rock of Gibraltar in morning, at 1000 docked at port, climbed rock, rode cable cars to top- had great view of area and meet some friendly apes, took pictures, visited St. Michael's Cave, later visited Main Street of the town and ate British meal of fish and chips
5/18Visited Picasso's house and a cathedral of Malaga, articles about Class Afloat appeared in local newspaper, professional photographer, Michelle Chaplow, joined Concordia for sail to Gibraltar and then Lisbon, departed Malaga at 1800
5/17Visited Granada- the last area Arabs lived in Spain before King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella forced them out, saw Alhambra- a magnificent palace built by the Moors, it is daylight in this part of Spain until 2100
5/16Docked in Malaga at 0925, students had free day to explore, at 1700, local press and TV station visited Concordia to interview and photograph students, stray puppy tried to get onboard, students could offer food but not a new home
5/15Motored along coast of southern Spain, in contact with harbor pilots, arrived in Malaga
5/14Completed sail manuevers, at 1414 crossed Prime Meridian, saw submarine at a distance of 3 nautical miles
5/13Had small yellow bird as a stowaway onboard, military jet tipped its wing at Concordia, not stopping at Palma, Mallorca because we are behind schedule, next stop will be Malaga, Spain on May 16th
5/12Normal day at sea with classes and bosun's work, French milatary plane buzzed by twice
5/11Had guest lecturer onboard to talk about Sardegna, some students had lunch with Italian families, classes resumed at 1600, departed Cagliari

5/10Visited site of ancient Roman ampitheatre, visited local school and had lunch, drove to Nohra (outside of Cagliari) to investigate fort ruins
5/9Had free day, most of the shops, museums, and businesses in Cagliari are closed in afternoon from 1330 to 1700, received mail, wrote postcards and letters home

5/6Departed from Malta at 1220, from 1300 to 1400 all sails set, have a guest onboard from Verdala International School until Cagliari

5/4Had walking tour of ancient city of Mdina and Rabat Catacombs, visited the ship Floretta and attended a lecture on Mediterranean marine animals, students from the international school toured Concordia
5/2 Had walking tour of Valetta, saw St. John's Cathedral and the Palace of the Masters, visited Verdala International School, some students saw Romeo and Juliet for English class

4/15Bad weather in AM with winds of 20 knots and heavy rain, said farewell to new friends from the Ukraine, at 1600 departed Odessa, heading for the Bosporus Strait and Greek Islands, had classes
4/10At 1830, in Odessa's harbor, between 2000 and 2200, cleared customs and immigration, that night dinner served by the teachers onboard
4/9Stormy weather continued, wooden pin on mainstay sail broke- mainstay sail doused because there were several rips along the seams caused by the wind, have to mend the sail, many of crew feeling sick due to rough seas, saw the comet
4/8Had stormy weather, high seas, high splashes of sea water reaching the bridge, the bowsprit often in the water, restricted movement of the crew on the deck, all hatches closed, many seasick- classes cancelled
4/7Sailing in the Sea of Marmara, had beautiful views of Istanbul and its domes, passed under two high bridges that connect Europe to Asia, entered Black Sea en route to Odessa, Ukraine
4/6Left anchorage at 8 AM, spotted snowy peaks on islands in the distance, entering Straits of Dardanelles, passed by 2 war monuments port side commemorating the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915- saluted the memorials by hoisting flags of Australia and New Zealand, at 2000, entered sea of Marmara
4/5Stong winds made it impossible to enter straits of Dardanelles- we were forced to take shelter in Moudhrou Bay, anchored there
4/4Snowed, had sail training examination
4/3Two Greek islands spotted from a distance of about 50 miles, had abandon ship drill, had lunch without bread- oven failure
4/2First day in Mediterranean Sea, restricted water consumption (for showers) because of low production of useable water with our osmosis process- couldn't make water in Suez Bay and Canal because water was too dirty
4/1At 0310 started thru Suez Canal with pilot, at 0700 waiting in Great Bitter Lake for new pilot to take us thru next part
3/31At anchor- waiting to enter the Suez Canal, students still taking exams, celebrated Easter with a big dinner after last exam of the day
3/30Had exams, shores of Egypt in sight
3/29Started Bosun work- replacing lines, sanding, and varnishing wooden parts of gangway, entering Gulf of Suez
3/28Rough seas, high swells, bright comet in the night sky
3/27Completed sail manuevers-setting and dousing the sails, saw dolphins off port and starboard bow, trapped four rats
3/26Had classes, at 2 PM finally left Jeddah, students studying hard for exams, change in watches- new rotation, new watch leaders
3/24Had free morning, returned to the ship at 4:00 PM to provision
3/23Went to a resort- worked out, played basketball, swan, sent mail, went to art shows, Miss Smith left to return to Class Afloat office
3/22Girls visited Pakistanian Embassy School, boys went horse back riding, all students went to desert to watch sun set and full moon rise
