|Paavo E. Siitam|
Marine Biology and Chemistry Teacher
I sought this position because I have a huge interest in the sciences and in the sea. Many of my favorite books since childhood have dealt with the sea; books such as Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, Moby Dick, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki.
My goals for the voyage are to have an enjoyable, safe, and healthy voyage. To become friends with, and get along with all of my shipmates; my students, the other teachers, and the professional crew. To participate in all aspects of shipboard life. To help out wherever I can. To get my sea legs quickly. I want my students to learn a lot, to study diligently, and to do well in their Chemistry and Marine Biology courses. At the same time, I want all of us to have fun. I want my students to be receptive to whatever the sea brings our way. After all, we will be immersed in our laboratory. We will analyze sea water for certain chemicals. We will observe a tremendous diversity of life in our plankton nets and while snorkeling on reefs, peering into tidal pools, and walking on mud flats.
