May 2 Calm sailing up Chesapeake Bay, sailing "wing-in-wing". The sun feels great after the cool days we've been having.
May 3 Spirit docked in St. Michaels, Maryland this afternoon.
May 6 After getting underway yesterday afternoon, we sailed up the Chesapeake and through the canal to the Delaware River. Now, we're heading south through Delaware Bay, following the shipping channel. Lots of traffic, which means lots of coastal piloting practice!
May 7 Wow! less than 14 days left. Students are now acting as watch leaders and being graded on their performance. Deckhands are back with the watches…as students.
May 8 We spotted a big orange ball in the eastern sky, around 0600 hours this morning. It was a welcome addition to our otherwise cold morning. We are anticipating that it will go away later this evening. Students are even figuring out our position based on observations of this ball.
May 9 We ended up not stopping in New York City today. Instead, we did a quick fly-by, with a lot of short tacks in New York Harbor before heading up the East River, through Hell's Gate, and out into Long Island Sound.
May 10 We're off Bridgeport, Connecticut right now, heading east toward Mystic. We need to go into the river at high water, so we don't go aground. We'll probably anchor tonight and head in tomorrow.
May 11 Last night, we anchored in Fisher's Island Sound (part of New York), then sailed up the Mystic River to Mystic Seaport today. Now, we have lots of parents and lots of plans here for the weekend. A planetarium visit is on for tonight, with Mystic Seaport's own Don Treworgy.
May 12 Students are enjoying Mystic Seaport today, with a chance to explore the exhibits and tour the marine science laboratory run by the Williams College Mystic Seaport Maritime Studies Program. Tomorrow, the students are taking a field trip to Stonington Point for a lecture and romp through the tidepools with world-famous scientist and director of the Williams-Mystic Program, James T. Carlton.
May 14 Just had a rain squall pass by; besides that, it’s cool air today and partly sunny. We’re having some smooth sailing with flat seas and a good breeze. We left Mystic today, and are currently somewhere between Block Island and East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
May 15 We're anchored near Provincetown, Massachusetts today, waiting for some weather to blow through. Students are busy getting all their work finished up.
May 16 Students had their Navigation/Seamanship final today. We plan to get underway this evening, heading toward Gloucester.
May 17 After sailing to Gloucester last night, we spent the morning in town, getting our last dose of ice cream, showers, and telephones before we reach Boston on Sunday afternoon.
May 18 We're looking for whales on Stellwagen Bank. No luck yet. Heading toward Misery Island in Salem Sound.
