| Very
light air through yesterday afternoon. Sailed with reacher (light air=big jib) then set
spinnaker as wind came aft and we had to bear off to pass between islands of Natuna Besar
and Subi. Gybed spinnaker at 2 a.m., then back again at 5 a.m., then set reacher again at
7a.m. Busy night. Now heading south. Sailing with full main and reacher. Rich

are becalmed as Sea Witch sails away. Only made 105 nm in the last 24 hours.
Midnight to 4 a.m.watch covered seven miles. 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. covered 12 nm. Have sailed
two full circles for lack of steerage way. Ultimate in frustration. Some good news,
though: we crossed the equator yesterday! Rich Wilson |

| Yesterday
had west wind from noon through midnight, very unusual, all forecasts plus weather maps
show easterly winds. West wind allowed us to get through most of Karimata Strait to the
southeast before becoming becalmed again. Drifted past fishing boats talking to each
other. Rich Wilson |

| Still
essentially becalmed. Aeolus tempts us every 12 hours with 7-8 knots of wind, with which
GAII can make 8-9 knots, and we both breathe a sigh of relief, we will be out of the Java
Sea soon, but alas, 10 minutes later, glass calm. [more]

into Sunda Strait; large power plant with no pollution guidelines put much soot in our
eyes; tacked across Strait toward Sumatra shore, went similarly in close, fragrant,
enticing spice smell, wonderful. Passed Krakatoa in dark, just saw its shape, cleared last
island to enter Indian Ocean after sunrise. Rich Wilson |
