Last 24 hours best since early out of Hong Kong. Sailing south to get to trade winds, and west to make mileage toward Cape of Good Hope. Full main and jib. Sea Witch further south and east, had several slow days, so we've caught up some. Birds around boat. [more] – Rich Wilson

A strong run through the night as the trade winds steadied and strengthened. Because the seas were building, we had to cut our speed down from a good 15 knots to keep from getting too beat up. Had to wear protective goggles because so many flying fish were coming aboard. Rich du Moulin was struck in the back by one! (he's OK) – Rich Wilson

Slow through night, wind direction changed to ENE, so we had to sail down to 200T, nearly south. Compared Great Circle (GC) route vs. Rhumb Line (RL), yesterday, GC is 237T, RL is 253T, with GC 72 miles shorter, to Cape of Good Hope. Spoke to iron ore carrier bound for Sunda Strait in early evening. – Rich Wilson

2 reefs in mainsail plus jib. Being cautious about inverting mast with this sail combination. Mast bending forward at hounds, bowing sideways with load of mainsail, and twisting with load of running backstay, all subtle, but true loads, and not desirable for mast. We must keep them to a minimum. [more] – Rich Wilson

Fresh breezes and squally wind, some rain. At 6 pm took in all light sails, royal stud sails, and stay sails. Through the night strong breezes from SE, squally. Ends with strong breezes, cloudy. – Capt. Waterman

Black clouds and extra wind through the night, several sail changes in the midnight watch, trade winds blowing. Big swells. Cyclone Indigo developing off northern Australia. Forecasters say no problem for us, but we're keeping an eye on it through satellite images/weather maps anyway.  – Rich Wilson

Squall caught us with too much sail in early morning and we took a bit of a thrashing; took the reef from #1 to #2. All is well. Cyclone Indigo, 115 kts, building off NW Australia, moving slowly SW. GAII currently expanding gap. Keeping an eye on Indigo. – Rich Wilson

Last evening, confused, large sea, such that we moved two water jugs aft from forward to get weight aft, considered #3 reef when wind hit 24 knots, then subsided. Hunkered down w/#2 reef and staysail. Very big swell, 15', with sea on top, swell very long. Several steep waves splashed into cockpit. Confusing. – Rich Wilson
