Switched to staysail no main late afternoon, allowed us to sail higher and slower so we could sail around some of the bigger waves. Much handsteering. Through night: 30-35 knots of wind, big seas. Huge sheets of water and solid water coming into cockpit. Trying to handsteer as much as possible to avoid biggest crunches. GAII amazing. – Rich Wilson

Light airs from South. In the evening the wind hauled to East, sets all stud sails both sides. Ends with light airs from East, clear, warm, smooth. – Capt. Waterman

Sailed through the night with staysail; exceedingly tumultuous seas; washing machine effect with waves emerging from all directions and disappearing for no apparent reason. Extremely difficult for boat. Morning, wind to 20 knots, hoisted #3 reefed mainsail plus staysail. Speed picked up, then wind increased and we had to roll up part of the staysail. – Rich Wilson

All through these 24 hours light breezes from East clear pleasant weather. Ends the same. – Capt. Waterman

Wind and crashing continued through afternoon and night. Tremendous seas washing over whole boat. Swells to 25' with crests. Thunderous crashes of waves into side of boat knocked out GPS, either antenna or transceiver or both. Went to backup handheld [more]. – Rich Wilson

Front passed through in night. Thunderstorms, squalls in the morning. Steady wind 10 knots in mid-day allowed some progress. This afternoon, wind dropped to 5-8 knots with huge lumpy sea, making little progress. – Rich Wilson

Nearly calm all through the night. At daylight made a sail ahead. Wind very light from East, cloudy. At 6 a.m. the wind came out of SE. Took in all studsails, braces by the wind. At 9 spoke British Bark Macedon from Poncherrey bound to London, 42 days out. The wind hauled to ESE strong. – Capt. Waterman

Yesterday late afternoon breeze came back, started to make fast time, up to 12 knots over ground. Wind velocity increased into the night and we went all the way through sail inventory to staysail plus third reef in mainsail. Still have that combination up. Rapid rise in barograph as we approach new high [more]. – Rich Wilson

Begins with strong breezes from SE which hauled to ESE. So all night hauled to East; in the morning set all light sails. Ends with strong breeze from East. – Capt. Waterman

Wind slowly shifting to east, making good time down coast. Went aloft this a.m. to clear VHF antenna that in the violent seas of a few days ago had wrapped itself back around our wind indicator; very rough trip aloft. Spoke to a bulk carrier Singapore for Brazil, couldn't get name, going parallel, took a long time to steam away from GAII. – Rich Wilson

Strong breezes from E to ENE all through the day, grumbling sea, all sail set. Toward noon threatening appearances in the west, took in light sails. – Capt. Waterman
