Physical Conditioning Activity
Spring 2003

Sea Witch's record of 74 days 14 hours = 1,800 hours. Only Rich Wilson and Rich du Moulin will be aboard Great American II. They will sail both day and night, never stopping. (Even if they wanted to stop, they couldn't anchor in the middle of the ocean because the ocean is usually about three miles deep, and their anchor line is only 300 feet longit wouldn't reach the bottom!) They will alternate solo watches, sailing the boat each individually, except when some on-deck situation requires both of them. Therefore, they both need to be in excellent physical shape, as they are depending on themselves and each other for their own safety.

Rich and Rich, because of their different jobs, have taken completely different approaches to getting into shape. Their workouts are as follows:

Once weekly:
Swim 1.25 miles in pool
   or
Run 2 miles to Harvard Stadium,
run up 31 seats on 25 stadium sections,
run 2 miles back.

Twice weekly:
bike 3/4 mile
   40 situps
bike 1/4 mile
   25 pushups
bike 1/4 mile
   12 chinups on tree
bike 3/4 mile
   20 squat leaps
bike 3/4 mile to track

   40 situps
run 1/4 mile
   25 pushups
run 1/4 mile
   12 chinups on soccer goal
run 1/4 mile
   20 squat leaps
run 1/4 mile

bike 3/4 mile
   20 squat leaps
bike 3/4 mile
   12 chinups on tree
bike 1/4 mile
   25 pushups
bike 1/4 mile
   40 situps
bike 1/4 mile
   plunge into the 60 degree Atlantic Ocean to refresh!
bike 1/2 mile home.

October:
Run 3 miles x 5 times/week
