Captain Thomas Bushy
Vice President of Marine Operations, Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Captain Thomas L. Bushy is the Vice President of Marine Operations at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He a BS in Marine Transportation from Massachusetts Maritime Academy and a MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, as well as a deep-sea Master’s license.

Captain Bushy began his career at MMA in 1981, and served as a professor of marine transportation, and filled many roles in the administration, particularly in marine education. In 1997 he was selected to be the Master of the Academy’s unlimited tonnage training ship. The training cruises usually carry about 500 cadets and 100 crewmembers to ports in Europe or the Caribbean Sea each year.

Captain Bushy was raised near Long Island Sound in Clinton, Connecticut, where he learned about boats and the maritime world while working at local marinas and yacht clubs. After graduation from MMA in1974 he sailed professionally for Gulf Oil and American Overseas Marine, and has served in all license capacities. Today his leisure hours are spent cruising the shores of Cape Cod in his small powerboat, and crewing aboard offshore sail boats in summer competitions.
