Capt. William G. Schubert Maritime Administrator, MARAD The United States Senate unanimously confirmed President Bush’s nomination of Captain William G. Schubert as Maritime Administrator on December 6, 2001. Prior to his confirmation, Captain William G. Schubert was President of International Trade & Transportation, Inc. (IT&T) in Houston, Texas. At IT&T, he provided transportation related consulting services to ocean carriers, project exporters, freight forwarders, and lending institutions. Captain Schubert has dedicated twenty-seven years of his career to the maritime industry, including nine years at the Maritime Administration. At MARAD, he spent four years (1986-1990) as an offshore industry expert advising the Maritime Administrator in policy development for the management, maintenance and liquidation of assets acquired through defaults under the Federal Ship Financing Program. Captain Schubert also spent five years (1990-1995) as MARAD’s regional representative for all MARAD’s program interests in the southwestern region of the United States. During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Captain Schubert was responsible for monitoring the Port Readiness Program, vessel load out operations and interagency planning meetings for the Port of Houston. Captain Schubert is a 1974 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and has 12 years operational experience sailing as an officer aboard U.S. flag vessels. He obtained a USCG Unlimited Master License any Oceans in 1979 and served ten years as a commissioned officer in the United State Navy Reserve. Captain Schubert was a cofounder of the US Exporters Competitive Maritime Council in 1998 and held memberships in the US Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, the National Industrial Transportation League and the US Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association. He was awarded the US Merchant Marine Outstanding Professional Achievement Award in 1994 and the Secretary of Transportation’s "Silver Medal" for Meritorious Achievement in 1989. While employed with Global Marine Drilling as a Master/Offshore Installation Manager, Captain Schubert received the company’s "President’s Excellence Award" in 1985 for preventing loss of life and property during a severe well blowout in the North Sea. Captain Schubert resides in Pinehurst, Texas with his wife Gail Marlene Becker and has two children.
