Sarah McCarthy
Santa Clara University
from Santa Cruz, California, USA
My name is Sarah McCarthy and I am a junior at Santa Clara University in northern California. I am pursuing a double major in biology and environmental science. I chose Santa Clara University for its beautiful campus, good reputation, and small classes. The campus is built around the Santa Clara Mission, a historical California landmark.
Besides a love of science, my hobbies are all centered around water. In high school, I was captain of my swim team and I competed in synchronized swimming, winning two national competitions. I am a lifeguard at a beach in southern California during the summers, and I like to surf and occasionally play water polo. I recently became a certified scuba diver, and I am very excited to use these new skills in South Caicos.
In my future career, I hope to be working toward environmental preservation and restoration of marine habitats. The goals of the Center for Marine Resource Studies are consistent with mine and I am very excited to participate in the directed field research. I chose the site in South Caicos because it sounds like the perfect blend of education and exciting hands-on experiences to teach us about resource management. I am also very excited to meet other students my age that are interested in the same field.
