| Toys, Ties and Shoes - Who Organizes Your Room, Anyway?
You are about to become a scientist. Go into your bedroom, pull your toys out of
the closet, and put them in a pile in the middle of your room. Sift through the pile for
a few minutes, and look at the different types of toys that you have. Maybe some
have wheels, some are dolls, some are green, etc. Separate these toys into smaller
piles containing similar characteristics. You have just made general classifications for
your toys, just like scientists do with plants and animals. In each smaller grouping of
toys, now divide them up into smaller and smaller groups with common
characteristics until you can't divide them up anymore. You have just made you first
scientific classification! Now mix up your toys and try to classify them in a different
way. Try this with your dad's ties or your mom's shoes. Make sure you ask them,
first!
