An Experiment in Environmental Protection

Ask your parents if you can do an experiment on your front lawn. If they say it’s OK, ask them to help you. Find a part of the lawn that people walk on a lot. Put up a small sign that says “Please Keep Off the Grass.” Observe the lawn for a week to see if people abide by the sign. Why do they or don’t they? If they don’t, try another method of keeping people off. For example, put some 2-foot stakes in the ground and connect them with string around your protected area (and keep the sign up). Do people keep off now? Is it hard to get people to keep off the grass? Why or why not? What do people say about your sign? The challenges that you face on your front lawn are similar to those that people who manage wildlife and marine parks. Do you think it’s easy to do this kind of work?
