Surprises of the Sea

 The Coral Reef

The coral reef is rich with marine life. Sponges, starfish, molluscs (shells), sea urchins and fish live and swim in and around the coral.

In fact, the coral reef has been compared to the rainforest, because it has so many different species of life in one place.

Even though the reef is colorful and full of life, there are very few nutrients (check glossary) to be found. That's because the animals and plants that live there don't let any extra food go to waste--it's quickly consumed.

What's the difference between shells and coral?
