The three queen conch
(Strombus gigas) that Colin,
Drew and Tim are holding
commonly are found in the
waters around South Caicos
Island. The conch are being
studied at the SFS center
because they are an important
part of the local economy.
| Island Wildlife The island of South Caicos is
small, but the wealth of wildlife,
both on land and in the waters
surrounding the island, is
enormous. These pictures show
a small representation of the
fauna (animals) and flora
(plants) that live on and around
the island.

This wasp is an important part
of the local ecology. They
pollinate much of the local
flora. Hummingbirds also play
a role in plant pollination. |

The Caribbean Reef Squid
(Sepioteuthis sepioidea) is an
amazing animal that seems to
be fond of jumping into the
research boats as they motor
around. See Erica Fenton's
journal entry from February 28!
| An important part of the local
wildlife is the plant life,
providing food and shelter for
many of the local animals.
|
Don't forget the cultural
wildlife, too. Students (Homo
sapiens) at the SFS center
work hard on their research
and academics, and they need
to relax and socialize every
now and then! |
