How did you get to be a scuba diver?

by Shana Brickman on site

I have always been intrigued by the ocean and its mysterious world. My dream is to swim with the dolphins.

Through SCUBA diving , I’m able to explore and enjoy the beauty of the sea. SCUBA stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. It is different from snorkeling, in that I’m able to breathe normally by a mixture of oxygen and some other gases that is supplied upon demand from a tank allowing for long periods of swimming underwater.

I enrolled in an Open Water Diver course through Scuba Schools International (SSI) which met Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 for three weeks. It was very small group with, only six students and two instructors. Each of us read required readings for each class, watched videos, attended lectures and practiced skills in the pool. The classroom lectures were followed by real dives that took place in the ocean.

I took my open water dives in Pompano Beach, Florida from a commercial diving boat called the "Seahorse". I saw curious barracudas, shy rays, multicolored fish, and gorgeous varieties of coral and other sea flora. My two days of four SCUBA dives and one snorkel dive were amazing. We even saw dolphins leaping along side our boat. I encourage everyone to learn about SCUBA because the underwater world is quite lovely.
