Q&A with South Caicos

From the week ending March 7, 1997

What is your favorite part of being on South Caicos Island?
......Joan M., Montgomery, Alabama, USA
by Cassandra Cummings, 3/3/97, South Caicos Island

My favorite part of being on South Caicos Island is exactly the fact that it is an island! Can you imagine being able to walk out of your front door and come to the ocean no matter which way you walked? One of the things that is so fun about South Caicos is that it is small. The School For Field Studies is located on the southern end of the island, but if I want to go to the point furthest away from where we are located, the very northern part of the island, I only have to walk about two hours. At this rate I can walk around the whole island in one day. Wouldn’t it be cool to figure out how long it would take to walk around the United States, and then compare that with our little South Caicos?!

What do you really miss from home?
...JC, Babson Park, Massachusetts,USA
by Jessica Alwes Howington, 3/3/97, South Caicos Island

The thing I miss most is my college back in Pennsylvania. I don't miss the classes there, but I do miss my friends. You really notice how comfortable you have been with a group of people when you are away from them. One of the great things about going abroad is the appreciation you gain both for your new home and for your old home.

At meal times, we often list our favorite foods from home: pizza, milkshakes, Chinese food….We are fed well here, but it is tough being away from the foods we were used to. I think that that's the way it is with many things here at the School for Field Studies. The people here are great, but we do miss our friends and family from home.

Of course, it's difficult to get used to any new place. The trick is to keep my memories of home at a healthy level rather than letting sadness make me miss out on experiences here. After all, South Caicos will soon be a memory, too, and I want to make it a good one.
