School For Field Studies Cook

Isabella de la Cruz (Izzy) is the cook at the SFS center. She is originally from the Dominican Republic, and she came to South Caicos Island thirteen years ago. Oringinally, Izzy worked at the Admirals Arms Hotel, which is now the SFS research center. Izzy is a wonderful cook who always puts out a great meal, even when it seems that there is not enough food with which to prepare one. She is great at making-do with limited resources and helping to keep students and staff well-fed and happy. Some students say that if the wind is right, they can smell her fabulous cooking one quarter of a mile away!

Izzy has several children, and she enjoys listening to the many Christian Radio Broadcasts that can be heard locally. Although Izzy speaks and understands English well, she prefers to speak Spanish. As a result, many students leave the island having learned more Spanish from Izzy than if they had taken a language class in school. She recently received her Turks Islander status, which allows her to work on the Turks and Caicos Islands indefinitely. She enjoys working at the school and interacting with the students, and everyone loves her.
