Tomas Jamir

Field Director

Tomas Jamir has a B.S. in Fisheries and an M.S. in Physical Oceanography from the University of the Philippines; an M.S. in Marine Resource Management, M.Ag. in Fisheries Science and Agribusiness, M.A. in Resource and Economic Geography, M.B.A. in International Development, and is candidate for a PhD in Biological Oceanography from Oregon State University. Before joining SFS, Tomas worked as an extension agent with the Development Academy of the Philippines where he organized and trained Fishermen's Associations in commercial fishing. A year later, he joined the U.P. faculty where he taught courses in fish handling and refrigeration, oceanography, meteorology and fishing techniques for six years. While doing his graduate work at O.S.U., Tomas joined the staff of the Educational Opportunities Program where he taught developmental math and science courses for another five years. Over the years, Tomas received several awards for excellence in teaching from three different educational institutions. While at U.P., he also served as Chairman of the Dept. of Marine Fisheries. Tomas' research interests include: marine ecological processes of both tropical and upwelling ecosystems, global and local impacts of El Nino-Southern Oscillation, folk-based fisheries management and aquaculture, technology transfer, international business and economic development.
