From the week ending March 7, 1997
What do you eat on a typical day in Australia? Can you find many of
the same food where you grew up?
...Paul S., Seal rock, OR, USA
by Apurva Dave, Dorian Fougeres, and Matt Pike, 2/25/97... from
Queensland
All of the meals here are basically the same as those in the
USA. However, we have had a chance to eat some fairly
exotic tropical fruits, especially when we visit the local markets.
These fruits include, mangos, lai-chees, guava, passion fruit,
soursops, banyan nuts, jack fruit, kiwis, wild bananas, wildfigs,
and Davidson's plums.
While visiting a local farm to study reforestation techniques we
were able to eat pikelets ( like pancakes) served with
Davidson's plum jam. We were also served fruit cordials made
from the fruit of a Lemon Aspen. Very delicious!
What kinds of classes do you have to take and how do they compare
with the classes you have taken before?
...Erin M., Longview, WA, USA
by David Stern, Mark Rivers, Barry Stephenson, 2/27/97... from
Queensland
Rainforest Ecology, Principles of Rainforest Management,
Socio-Economic Policy and Values, and Independent Directed
Projects are just a few of the courses we have to take while
studying here in the rainforest.
For the most part, these are like the courses we take at school.
Our lectures often take place in the field, which gives us a
chance to experience things first-hand, making the classes even
more exciting..
