Queensland Q&A

From the week ending May 9, 1997

What advice and suggestions would you give high school students interested in studying the rainforest while in college? ...Mrs. Cicardo's Class, Denver, CO, USA

by Paul Buzzard, 5/5/97... from Queensland

As I’m sure you know, the best way to study the rainforest is first hand, so if students really are keen they should look into studying at a field school such as The School for Field Studies. I realize that it is not possible for everyone to get field experience. However, most universities have good courses in tropical rainforest ecology available to students. Although these may not give the same experience as actually being in the forest, they provide an important source of background information. In fact, these courses should be taken before you do any work in the actual rainforest. Other possibilities include doing internships and other activities that don’t give college credit but are valuable because of the experience they provide. Ask an advisor or professor in the Biology department of a college for more information about the opportunities that are available.

Is Australia fun? If so, Why? Where will you be going next?
...Robert S., Mexico City, Mexico

by Sharon Cislowski, 5/5/97... from Queensland

I’m sure most of the students have had a blast during their time here. Mostly because it’s a totally different environment and they are away from home.

Many people will be continuing to travel around Australia. Some are finally going to Hinchin-brook Island, some are going to the Red Center (Ayers Rock, The Olgas, etc.), and others are just doing a tour of the major cities in Australia.
