Mark Buckley
Davidson College
from Painesville, OH
My name is Mark Buckley and I'm a junior at Davidson College in North
Carolina. I grew up in Painesville, Ohio. The things I do for fun mostly
take place outdoors, Primarily whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, and
windsurfing. Economics is my major, although I've taken many biology
courses. I hope to use my economics degree in some aspect of conservation. This is why I hvae
chosen to spend a semester in the rainforest.
Ecologists say rainforests are the most diverse ecosystem, with the greatest number of plant and
animal species. If I can gain a solid understanding of this environment, I should be much better
prepared to work with problems in simpler systems. Also, you can't pass up an opportunity to
spend time someplace as amazing as the Queensland rainforest, espcially when you realize how fast
the last wild places on this plaet are disappearing. By living and working completely in the forest for
a couple of months, I hope to develop a better sense of the natural world, and the comfort that
goes with it.
