from Pittsburgh, PA

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and I now attend Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. I am majoring in anthropology because I want to work with people involved in natural resource conflicts. My specialization is community-based conservation through Participatory Action Research (PAR). The latter is a form of social science research based on participation and democracy. PAR recognizes the central importance of local knowledge and aims to give underdeveloped cultures the tools to do their own research, take action, and solve problems. I am also taking a wide variety of classes outside the Arts & Sciences college, such as from the Natural Resources and City & Regional Planning Departments, in order to strengthen my environmental studies background and increase my knowledge about power, development, and powerlessness throughout the world.

This spring in Australia will be my second experience with SFS. My first one was a month last summer at the Center for Coastal Studies on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I plan to use my SFS experience in Australia as the basis for my honors thesis.
