Shannon Hernandez
Vassar College
from Lihne, HI
My name is Shannon Hernandez. I live on the island of Kaui, Hawaii, a
collections of small towns situated along the ocean plus interior mountains
covered by tropical rainforest. I am studying Science, Technology, and
Society at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. This is a program
which encompasses a wide variety of topics related to the ways in which a
science and society influence one another. I am focusing my studies on environmental issues in
biology, particularly issues of resource management and wild land conservation. In addition to
learning about rainforest ecosystems and field research, participating in the School for Field Studies
Astral ian rainforest management and wild land program is an opportunity for me to experience first
hand how society's demands on and attitudes toward nature influence environmental problem
solving. Working with SFS also means a chance to be a part of ongoing research and conservation
efforts for some of our most threatened natural habitats and wildlife.
