Pomona College Hi! I'm Arthur Wendel. I'm a junior at Pomona College in Claremont, California. I'm majoring in Chemistry Public Policy Analysis. The study of public policy analysis allows one to look more easily at programs, especially those from the government, and evaluate them or suggest means of making them more effective. The chemistry focus that I'm taking will be useful in evaluating environmental programs where pollution is controlled. I chose to go on this program for a couple of reasons. I wanted to have an experience other than a traditional college educational experience. I liked the environmental approach that this program took. Also, some of the same issues that seem to affect the Australian rainforest also affect the forest surrounding my hometown of Port Angeles, Washington. While it might be nice not to cut down any more forest, it is impossible. Instead a balancing act must occur between the pressures of needing wood and jobs and the impacts of choosing alternatives, such as switching to using plastic instead of wood. The world has many other problems: crime, war, hunger, racism, etc. However, it will be difficult to solve any of these without a habitable environment. |
